Description: East Germany, 1984. Only this is not the country that remained in the textbooks, but the gloomy fragment of alternative reality, where the Leviathan Corporation rules. Here, the air is impregnated with hopelessness, the streets are drowned in grayness, and invisible control is dominated by everything – chambers that change the mind, and empty promises of utopia for the obedient. You are Daniel McGovern, Roam agent from the Bureau of Thoughts. Your work is to delve into other people’s crimes, but not just like that: you have a car, which allows you to look directly into the heads of the suspects. This is not a walk in the park – each “dive” in consciousness opens the door to the nightmares, where reality cracks at the seams, and the truth is drowning in surreal images.
The gameplay in Karma: The Dark World is not about running around with weapons, but about leisurely immersion in other people’s memories. You wander through the broken worlds of other people’s minds, collect evidence, solve puzzles. Sometimes these are simple tasks like finding a key in the room, and sometimes – cunning riddles, where every trifle is surrounded by a role. Daniel interrogates, explores, connects pieces of the puzzle, while the story of Sean Mendes, a scientist, whose life went downhill after a strange case unfolds in front of him. The deeper you dig, the more questions: what is Leviathan hiding, and how is this due to Daniel himself?
Visually, the game is like a revived nightmare in the spirit of film masters. Thanks to Unreal Engine 5, the world comes to life in details: the light of lanterns pierces the thick darkness of the streets, the rooms are doused with red, as if blood, and statues pull their hands to the sky in a dumb prayer. The monsters that hide in the shadows of consciousness, and the alarming soundtrack enhance the sense of danger. This is not just scenery-each frame makes sense, refers to something more, whether it be Kafka’s bureaucracy or the painful atmosphere of anti-utopias. Karma is a journey where you are not so much playing as you live a story, step by step revealing its dark secrets.
