Description: Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is a bloody saga of revenge where the blade matters more than words. You are Jubei Yagyu, the last of his clan, following in the footsteps of the demonic warlord Nobunaga Oda. But it’s not just monster slaughter: there is the golden city of Imasho, where you can buy gifts for your allies – from flowers to erotic engravings. Some of them will later cover your back in battle, and some will betray you if you don’t please his strange tastes. And then there is Gogandanthess, a demon swordsman with theatrical manners who will mock you until you deal with his barrier.
The mechanics here are like layers of old varnish on a katana: fights with an emphasis on Issen counterattacks, transformation into Onimushu with invulnerability, and even a couple of puzzles in the spirit of Resident Evil. Demons drop souls: red ones pump up weapons, blue ones restore magic, and purple ones turn you into a deadly shadow for a couple of seconds. But the most interesting thing is the allies. You can give ninja Kotaro dubious trinkets until he starts summoning clones in battle, or give musketeer Magoichi a keg of sake so he can cover you with a shot from the roof. True, after the middle of the game the city will be empty, and all these eccentrics will either disappear or go to the final with you – depending on your generosity.
The finale awaits among the ruins of Gifu Castle, where Nobunaga laughs at you through the flames. There are no multiple endings here – just an old-fashioned epic with swords, magic and predictable heroism. But what else do they play Onimusha for if not for this? To feel the blade cutting through demonic flesh to the track Taro Iwashiro, and then grin when the Gogandanthess calls you a “pathetic little man” for the third time in a row.
