Description: Once Upon a Puppet is like if Tim Berton’s puppet theater suddenly came to life in video games. The main character Niv is literally soaring above the stage hand-a heap, which was expelled into the stage for “insufficiently perfect” creativity. There she meets a tree, a wooden little man with a crookedly sitting candle instead of a head, and their fate is literally confused – the magical thread tightly connects them together. This duet is now forced to travel around the world, which resembles theatrical stage after the apocalypse – all these dangling ropes, cardboard scenery and strange mechanisms, as if collected from details of an old orchestra.
Gameplay is a cunning mixture of a platformer and puzzle, where you have to simultaneously control two characters. Imagine that one hand pulls the lever, and the other at this time jumps over enemies – it sounds fun, but requires a fair coordination. Over time, your arsenal expands: double jumping, archery and even the ability to catapult on ropes appear. Levels are arranged as theatrical scenes – then you collect scattered decorations in the correct order, then you manipulate the light to create the desired silhouette.
Visually, the game is a real poem in the spirit of “Nightmare before Christmas.” There are carved wooden characters that creak with every movement, and gloomy purple shadows falling on the ruins of the “ideal” world. Detailization is especially good: ancient in new costumes (and they can be collected) looks like a palace jester or the hero of the Shakespearean tragedy. Even the menu is designed as a stained glass window in an old theater.
