Description: Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy is not just a label of a 1999 cult adventure game, but a real time travel where you are an nameless journalist who has received a strange task from a dying researcher. You have to return the stolen egg of a mythical white bird into a lost South American country, which is torn by political conflicts and a curse, which remained after the expedition of the 1930s. From the first minutes, the game envelops the atmosphere of secrets: the old lighthouse of Professor Valebua, yellowed cards with the notes “should not be here” and the same artifact – a huge egg, which seems to pulsate to the beat of your heartbeat.
Gameplay is a classic quest in the spirit of “Myst”, but with a modern presentation. You explore the jungle, ruins of villages and underground caves, controlling the “hydroplane” – a hybrid of the aircraft, boats and submarines that resembles the Jules Verne car assembled on the knee. Puzzles here are not puzzles for the sake of puzzles, but logical obstacles: to fix a broken radio transmitter using the details from the old generator, or to decipher Valelebua’s notes to find the way through the labyrinth of mangroves. The professor’s diary is especially good: his sketches of animals (like flying turtles) and notes in the fields (“Alvarez lying!”) Make the world alive.
Visually, the game balances between realism and surrealism: here you make your way through a swamp, where luminous vines hang from the trees, but you come across a giant mechanical clock built into a rock – a legacy of forgotten civilization. The atmosphere is complemented by a minimalistic soundtrack: the cries of invisible birds, the noise of rain on the leaves and distant peals of thunder, as if nature itself is unhappy with your invasion. The finale, however, can leave questions – but is it not the case with the best expeditions?
