Description: Bye Sweet Carole is a hand-drawn adventure with horror elements, inspired by old animated films, but lacking their lightness and charm. The action takes place at the beginning of the 20th century, in a stuffy school for girls called Bunny Hall. You play as Lana Benton, a lonely girl whose best friend Carol has suddenly disappeared. In search of the truth, Lana plunges into the world of dreams and nightmares – Corolla, where reality intertwines with mysticism, and an ominous owl with red eyes watches from the shadows.
The gameplay is based on leisurely puzzles, platforming and exploration. Lana can transform into a rabbit to jump higher and move faster, and solve puzzles that require changing characters or interacting with mechanisms. There are mini-games for balancing, dancing, and even time management, but most tasks boil down to running around with objects and repetitive actions. The controls are unclear in places, and the campaign is drawn out due to the constant return to previously completed locations.
The game’s main strength is its visual style: hand-drawn animation reminiscent of the Disney era and picturesque backgrounds. But the story is told dryly, the dialogues are clichéd, the characters are flat. Themes of feminism and oppression are touched upon superficially, and the tension never builds up: enemies are easy to avoid, health is quickly restored. The game looks more like an art experiment than an exciting adventure.
