Description: Death Howl is an unusual synthesis of genres: a pixelated soul-dead-building tragedy where you play as Ro, a mother who refuses to come to terms with the loss of her son. In 6000 BC, armed with shamanic rituals, she enters the spirit world to bring back the child before he disappears forever. Five areas, each with its own color palette and gloomy atmosphere – from an icy wasteland to a poisonous swamp – become an arena of struggle not so much with enemies, but with one’s own grief, embodied in the images of bosses.
The gameplay combines the mechanics of soulsliking and a tactical deckbuilder: battles take place on a checkered field, moves are calculated based on actions, and each card is not just damage or block, but a positional puzzle. Enemies move in strict patterns – for example, a raven attacks only from a distance of two squares in a straight line, and a worm strikes in an L-shape. If you died, you lost “Death Screams”, a currency that must be returned in five turns. In the “sacred groves” you rest, teleport and create new cards, but at the same time all enemies are reborn – as it should be in a true souls game.
Progression is divided by region: cards and passive bonuses (“tears”) work effectively only in their own zone, forcing you to rebuild the deck for each location. With up to 160 cards, up to four totems with unique modifiers, hidden caves and side quests, each run is deep and personal.
